The University of Hamburg combines excellent research with innovative teaching. We work together in this ever-changing environment to strengthen not just the University but also society as a whole for the future. Recently, the university was awared with the title University of Excellence in Germany and presents a compelling vision of flagship university: top-level research through collaboration in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region and internationally. The Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Hamburg is engaged in advanced research initiatives spanning environmental microbiology, biotechnological microbiology, infection biology, as well as biosecurity and bioethics. This research integrates experimental laboratory work with the formulation of strategies for biosecurity risk assessment within the life sciences. The academic curriculum comprises disciplinary lectures and practical training, complemented by compulsory courses in bioethics for students pursuing studies in the life sciences.

Dr. Mirko Himmel

 Dr. Mirko Himmel is principal investigator and senior project coordinator at the Department for Microbiology and Biotechnology, University of Hamburg, Germany. His research topics include molecular mechanisms of infection employed by human pathogenic bacteria. Further research interests: biological and chemical arms control; strategies for improved biosecurity (academia; industry). Academic teaching activities: Molecular Mechanisms of Infection (lecture); Principles in Bioethics (mandatory lecture); Biomedical Ethics (mandatory seminar). Additionally, Dr. Himmel frequently provides biosecurity advice for research groups, the iGEM Hamburg team, and governmental organisations. Currently, he is also Associated Senior Researcher at the SIPRI peace research institute.
